Speeches

In my perspective, a good speech is one that has an impact on the audience and manages to get the message across to them. It is also one that does not make its objective unclear and make the audience unsure of the motive of the speech. However, a good speech also needs something to accompany it - a good speaker. Without a good speaker, no matter how good a speech is, it is impossible to get the audience attention.

Now one of my favourite speeches is the one from the movie Transformers. In this speech, Optimus Prime tells us and explains how their race had came to life and also calls out to all the autobots taking refuge outside, telling them that they could look for him if they need help.

I feel that this speech is good as the speaker (Optimus Prime) varies his tone and emphasises on the important parts of the speech. He may not be very lively, but it is understandable as he is in a tense situation.

Why is this my favourite speech? I seldom listen to speeches and this is one of the few I listened to. However, this is the speech that leaves me with the deepest impression.

As this is from a movie which is not very realistic, there is nothing to learn about. So if you think that this video has something valuable to pick up, I'm sorry to say that there is none. I mean, its just a speech calling out to the world, just enjoy it while listening to it.

#5 Something I enjoyed doing on my own

On Wednesday in school, I learnt how to do something new - bake cookies. Normally whenever I go for recess, I would always buy a cookie and consume it, but not know how to make one. However, during the last home economics lesson I finally learnt how to make one!

When I got home, I ate a cookie, and surprisingly, it tasted better than the ones in the canteen! Perhaps it was just the flavour or maybe, its because I made the cookie myself. As we all know, food we make on our own taste exceptionally good. So then, I decided this Friday, I would make a few cookies myself!

Now finally its Friday! Which means that I am going to make a cookie! I laid all the ingredients on the table and looked at the always trustworthy recipe. I followed the steps accordingly and got all the steps right. I thought that there would be no problem as I did quite well for my first attempt in school, until, I found out that I do not have certain equipment needed! For example, I do not have the electronic mixer which was very important. Thus, I had no choice but to improvise. All of a sudden, an idea mushroomed in my head. It is not a brilliant one though, but I guess I had to make do with it.

My idea was to wait for the butter to melt and stir the mixture with a spoon. Told you it was not a bright one but I really had no choice. As there was much mixing to do, my arm soon got tired. However, I persevered and managed to get my recipe right.

In the end, what came out of the oven were freshly baked cookies. They are peanut flavoured! I shared them with my family and they all let out a string of praises. Looks like my efforts had not gone to waste!

Finally, although I encountered some problems, I still enjoyed what I had done, as it gives me a sense of achievement which I would never forget.

#4 A special moment I enjoyed with my family

Today was my grandmother's birthday, and every year we never fail to celebrate it. It was as usual that we do this year. Normally we would celebrate the birthday in a restaurant, but this year, we decided to celebrate it at my grandmother's house! I was thrilled when I heard that as it had been quite a long time since I had gone to her house.

When we reached there, it was crowded! Many of our relatives were there and the house was filled with a party atmosphere. Upon reaching there, I presented some presents to my grandmother who just turned eighty-four today. I then went to play and had a whale of a time with my cousins while I leave my parents to talk with others.

Later, at around dinner time, a buffet caterer came! We had a scrumptious dinner and rested a while before the cutting cake ceremony. By that time, I was already full but I am sure I would have some space for some cake.

After an hour or two, the cake was brought out! There seemed like there were uncountable candles but I knew that there were 12. That sure is a lot of candles! We then proceeded to singing the birthday song and cut the cake.

Later at night, we all proceeded back home with our appetites satisfied. I found today a great day as this is one of the rare opportunities we have to get a family gathering. Although the food in the restaurant is nicer, I still find a celebration at home the best as there is a sense of belonging among us.

#3 Something unusual that happened that day

Today, we were made to do the Chinese New Year decorations in class. As I am part of the class commitee, I decided it was only right for me to stay back and help out in the class decorations. As the secretary is supposed to be in charge of the class decoration, I thought that I was just going to provide manpower. However, to my horror, when I reached the school, I found out that the secretary was sick and went home! As I was the only member of the class commitee, I was therefore put in charge of this whole event.

Right after school, we started our decorations. I emptied the decorations and looked at them, at a loss, not knowing what to do. As I do not know anything or plans to decorate the classroom, I was worried I might screw up and make things worse. This also does not help with the fact that my class came in second last year and we are aiming for the first place for this year's competition.

Fortunately, I was not alone. Six people were with me. As many of them helped out in last year's Chinese New Year's decoration, they all began cracking immediately. I had no choice but to follow suit.

After a while, I started to get the hang of it. All I had to do is to find a suitable place of the decoration and place it there. It all seemed fine for the moment until we ran out of red packets!
As decorating the class needs a lot of designs on the wall, we need a lot of red packets. So running out of red packets is one of the worst things to happen at that time.
We were all in a loss at that time. As the deadline is looming, we only have a two days left to decorate the classroom. In the end, we have no choice but to send SMSes to everyone in the class and stay back another day.
Today, although I encountered many problems, I still found it a fruitful day and had a sense of achievement. I hope the other day I am staying back for will be better.

#2 A problem I encountered and how I managed to solve it

Today is the end of the weekend, which also means that all weekend homework have to be finished by today! As I had my Boy's Brigade parade yesterday, it was very tiring and when I got back home, I was knocked out all the way till around 6pm. So this leaves all the homework till today!

Whenever it hits Friday, teachers will try their best to assign as much homework as possible to students. Nonetheless, I suffered the same fate. My class was given homework by four different teachers, and that really is bad for us.

This morning, when I woke up, I knew I had to accomplish this almost impossible task by today or else I got to get ready for some scolding. I then started off with my work for about a few hours, but I soon got tired of seeing all those words! All of a sudden, something caught my attention - my school timetable!

Soon I made a timetable for myself, listing out when to study and when to play. Whenever I had done a part of my homework, I give myself a break and shortly after, I would continue working, For some reason, this would help greatly and not make it so tiring.

After a whole day of hard work, I finished all my homework! I truly have to thank my timetable for giving me such a great idea. Next time, when I get into such a situation again, I will know what to do.

#1 Something that took place in school

Boy's Brigade day (BB day) is a day to celebrate the founding of the Boy's Brigade. This event falls yearly on the 12th of January. I believe if you are a reader from Victoria School, you would have seen the Boy's Brigade standing in front of the whole Parade Square to commemorate the BB day. As you seen us do drill for the whole assembly, you will think that it is not a hard task, but you are wrong.

Just to get ready for this day, we have to attend three training sessions with each of at least 2 hours long. This was made just to perfect our drill movements and to ensure there is perfect coordination among us. Those who made mistakes were called out to watch us do our drill. Also, the training was tough and we were made to do countless number of push ups.

After three days of intensive training, it was finally BB day! We had to gather at the Boy's Brigade room early in the morning at 6.45 am. Just to satisfy this requirement and not be late, I had to wake up at 5.30 am. This did not help much when i did not have a good night sleep the previous night. Fortunately, I did not sleep in class on that day.

After gathering at the Boy's Brigade room, we went up to the parade square to do some last minute practicing for the big event. We did the drill for about half an hour before a prefect came up. It was already about time for the assembly when the parade commander asked a prefect where the assembly was held. To our horror, the assembly was held at the hall! We rushed down and ran like never before just to not get late for this major event. However, it all turned out to be a trick. We were called back, some others cursing the parade commander on being so gullible. We quickly shuffled back to our positions and stood still to act as if nothing happened.

Soon, everyone started coming in to the parade square and we waited patiently for the reading period to end. Once it finished, the parade commander's voice thundered throughout the parade square and we showed everyone a fine display of drills. Just before we left, we were greeted with a round of applause which made me feel my efforts were worth it.

In the end, what happened was a success. We gathered back at the Boy's Brigade room and the teacher praised us for our drill. I find this a good experience for me as I get to be part of a major event of my CCA. I really hope I can get a few points for this.

About me :D

Yo readers! I am Lyndon Leow and this is my first post. Welcome to my blog! I actually created this blog for an assignment which has a part in my exams. After this assignment, I might consider to continue blogging. Now more about myself.
I am a student studying in Victoria School as a Secondary 2 student. As i do not have a habit of writing diaries or journals, I actually do not like writing blogs. However, this blogging experience might change my mindset about blogging and I might continue if I enjoy it.
So thats about it for my first post. Thanks for reading this and I hope you all could follow me through my blog. :)
